Popular towns & villages, to visit or stay

Most popular side of the island to stay at is on the west coast with views to the caldera and the famous sunset. Usually the better the view the higher the price of the hotel (but you may luck out on some good deals especially off-season).

Most popular locations for sunset views:
Fira Town map– The Capital of Santorini, and usually the best bet to stay at. The town is bustling and open all year and a great base to start your sightseeing. Shopping, food, nightlife and many hotels and rooms at various price-range to choose from. There are options at the cliffside too.

Firostefani map– Just off the town center of Fira (within walking distance), this is good choice too. Being close enough to the hub but some distance away gives you a balance play & peace-and-quiet, especially if you arrive in high season where it can get pretty hectic. Many new hotels at decent prices have sprouted up in recent times.

Oia village map– Hailed as the best sunset watching spot on the island. It is a pretty village and great for sightseeing and picture taking. Many boutique & luxury hotels here and very popular for the romantic and honeymoon set. Usually Oia is a stop for tour groups to watch the sunset, so some areas can be a little packed around that time.

Imerovigli map, is another pretty village on the cliffside, located between Oia and Fira town. Another good choice for its charm and scenery.
All the above locations, are well known for cliffside hotels and views, if you are also combining your trip with some beach fun, then you could consider staying on the other side of the island. Many affordable priced hotels on the East coast. You may have less of a view but it is popular for budget travellers, those travelling with children and seniors who may find it a little stressful manuevering the many steps and cliff pathways on the west side.

Popular Seaside towns:

***Please take note that Santorini beaches are not the usual white sandy beaches as those you may find on other Greek Islands like Mykonos. Santorini has a unique volcanic type sand, in varying shades or red/black’/ dark volcanic sand. Everything is unique about this place, so keep an open mind and explore and delve into it!

Kamari Beach map

The most popular among the beaches on the island. Well located about 20 mins from town, it is accessible ample facilities such as restaurants, shops and entertainment and not to mention many hotels to choose from. Young friendly vibe suitable for all ages.

Perissa & Perivolos Beaches map

These are a little further away but still popular, many options for hotels at affordable prices, a more relaxed casual vibe. You can find some quieter areas and some more active for the party-goers.

Red Beach map

Most visit as a curiosity, however it is possible to also swim here. Not much else in terms of facilites. Recommended for the scenery and unique features.

Monolithos Beach map

One of the more quiet beaches and good option for a day visit, to catch some me-time.

Ammoudi Bay map

This is almost a fairy-tale like spot. Almost like a secret discovery (but its not), it just has that magical feel to it. Accessible by path / steps from Oia town, Ammoudi port is famed for its location on the caldera side of the island and a popular spot of seafood dinners. A short distance from the port area there are a few areas for swimming (not beach), waters are lovely and of course the sunset views, cliffs and clear waters, all the colors reflected here are mesmerizing.
